It’s been a while since I’ve been able to blog and share what I’ve been up to. First of all my apologies for the lack of recent updates on both the blog and the programs ZippyConverter and ZippyRippy. The hard drive in my machine crashed and so did the logic board, so I had to wait to get a new MacBook which I got for a steal at MacBookmart.com. I had to use my wife’s Windows computer for a little while. But, I’m back to the Mac and all restored from backup.

I’ve been spending the last few days trying to reconnect with my code, after not looking at it for a little while I started to get lost and wondered if there was a better way. So I’ve been starting with ZippyRipp, recompiling ffmpeg and finding more effective ways to rip a DVD and how to get metadata of the film itself into the resulting file. So, ZippyRippy 1.1 is almost done with compatability for iPod/iPhone/iPod touch/AppleTV and iPad, plus the ability to rip a raw MP4 file for use on media centers all with optional h.264 encoding, plus ZippyRippy will attempt to search IMDB and get metadata about the movie to add to the Apple compatable files or MP4 file. It will use the title of the disc to determine the title, but often titles of DVD discs aren’t that descriptive, so you’ll have the ability to search using a custom term and choose from a list. Also, ZippyRippy will make a disc image of a DVD for backup and archiving, and will rip the main title of a DVD to a single title DVD so when you put it in your player, it just plays, no menus to navigate.

On the ZippyConverter front, since I’m finishing up on ZippyRippy I then intend to incorporate the new build of ffmpeg and metadata functions.

Look for ZippyRippy soon, no firm date yet as I’m still testing.

Ben

I’ve had a Western Digital MyBook 1TB hard drive for a little over 2 years now. I’ve loved it, it’s been great for backup for Time Machine and for a scratch space for testing zippyRippy and ZippyConverter. However, on Thursday the drive went bust. As I put it in my USB port a warning came up for me telling me the drive cannot be repaired and it will mount as read-only. This wasn’t such a bad thing but I ran Disk Utility and got an error “Invalid sibling link” or something like that.Upon realizing this was getting serious I decided to blow the dust off my copy of DiskWarrior. The DVD drive in my computer is having some issues so I had to run DiskWarrior from my startup disk. It churned and churned and finally after about 20 minutes it came back and said that there wasn’t enough memory to rebuild the directory, error 2154. Scratching my head in confusion I googled to find out what the hell that was all about. It turns out that if you don’t have enough RAM DiskWarrior will stop trying to rebuild the directory, it seems that even trying to page virtual memory wasn’t enough for it either. If DiskWarrior won’t repair the disk, I don’t know where to turn.I had some updated other utilities I thought I’d try such as Drive Genius, which seems to basically just rum the built in fsck or fsck_hfs command and that failed. Used Tech Tool Pro 5 and that wouldn’t rebuild it either. Nothing I could find would rebuild the catalog B tree on this drive.I was forced to reformat the drive, making sure to get off what was important but as I was reformatting the idea struck me. If I just do a “ho hum” format then it might be easy to use a data recovery tool to retrieve the data. I settled on Data Rescue 3 which will attempt to retrieve the deleted files from the drive. It’s churning on it now but will take 96 hours to get the information from the drive before it’ll restore the files.Guess it’s another project idea, but on the flip side, this was an error that there was no coming back from in an easy way if the heavy hitters of disk utilities can’t fix that error.UPDATE !: 1/26/10 1:43am ET. 25 hours have elapsed and I’m waiting for Data Rescue 3 to finish seeing what was on the drive, it’s processed almost 2 billion blocks and found over 6 million files. I don’t know the result of what files it found, as long as I can recover my Doctor Who seasons I’m a happy camper. If not, no big woop, I’m sure I can get them again.

I’ve been working on nailing down a few issues between ZippyConverter and ZippyRippy. It seems there are 2 errors plaguing the products which I’m addressing through the next update:

ZippyConverter:

Upon first launch after you download it there is an error where it states the “date” returns stating the argument is not correct, I’ve been working on this issue for quite some time and think I’ve finally got it licked, of course if you quit ZippyConverter and relaunch it the error goes away.

One other issue has corpped up where I’m using some open binaries to get the info about the files which is causing stalling of the program. To this end I’ve crafted a few way to get the info from the files. It turns out the physical size of some files are causing ZippyConverter to stall while it’s waiting for the info to be obtained, and some FLV and MKV and AVI files with odd headers are also causing the issue. Look for updates to come down the line in the next few days for this issue. My goal is to make this the easiest to use, swiss army knife of video and audio conversion for the Mac.

ZippyRippy

There are also one one issue with ZippyRippy.

The first one is an “idleend” error that occurs when the product is unregistered, this is being worked on, there seems to be a piece of code that’s checking for information on the progress of the rip that’s firing from time to time and causing an error. I’ve put it in a “try” block which is supposed to make it quiet when it fails, but it doesn’t always stay quiet.

I’m working again on the issue of the program stalling when it hits 99% stalling while imaging. It turns out the end of the routine isn’t being tripped on all systems.

So there you have it, more to come in the following days on these issues, plus I’m working on some new software which will take a little while but more on that later.

Fixes an issue where Flash (.flv) or (.swf) files would need to ful through the secondary engine first. They will now be converted directly.

There are more that is being worked on as we speak, but I wanted to get this release out the door to fix these minor issues. You can download ZippyConverter and register for $8.99 at http://zippyrippy.com/downloads/zippyconverter.dmg

ZippyRippy is still being worked on as well, there have been some minor re-writes to the program due to some things I’ve put into ZippyConverter which make sense to migrate them to ZippyRippy. Also, for ZippyRippy it may help to have either VLC installed or install the package on the disk image to enable decoding of some protected DVD’s.

I had a great opportunity tonight to use ZippyConverter and ZippyRippy on computers other than my own. It’s interesting when you’re an independent small time software deveoper to play with computers you don’t own but are trusted to do so. I’ve learned a lot tonight and look forward to tweaking ZippyConverter and ZippyRippy to take advantage of the diversity that Mac computers and their different configurations offer to make a seamless experience. I’ve been told I have a hit on my hands and now I need to concentrate on marketing and making these products the best they can be. Plus I got a few new ideas for programs tonight which may proove interesting to develop and hope they will make your lives easier for far less money than the competition.
